The search for credible role models

Adeze Ojukwu

The need for good and godly role models, is quite urgent. Society is gradually losing it’s cohesion due to dysfunctional family lifestyles and economic pressure.

Most people are influenced by social and cultural norms of society. Role modelling, according to social scientists, is crucial to the development and integration of man in society. Sadly the lack of credible leaders and models has led to unprecedented chaos in many communities.

Clearly, the present age has become a tale of conflicts and commotion.
All forms of immorality, ungodliness and evil tendencies are escalating, across, society, while moral purity and holiness are on the decline.

The battle between good and bad, has never been more apparent. Sadly, the church is also part of the duel, and sometimes embroiled in the ugly contest.

Many sanctuaries and worship centers have become hubs of entertainment, fashion parades and celebrity shows.

Social media and the craze for money, seem to be driving young people to indescribable desperation and sometimes self-destruction.

Many have ruined their lives due to sex, drugs, peer pressure, unbridled ambition.
Some have died, due to pervasive acts, consumption of alcohol and toxic substances, while many are on the suicide watch.

Sadly some adults including parents are also shackled by these ugly activities, because society is gradually losing its moral and spiritual compass.

The good news is that God offers a timeless panacea, through the message of Apostle Paul in Philippians 3.

‘I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.’

Our citizenship is in heaven

‘Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.’

‘For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame— who set their mind on earthly things.’

‘For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.’
