Today’s sermon on overcoming depression and related psychological problems is drawn from Psalm116:7
Depression is a silent killer.
The number of depressed people in our world today has been rising, due to numerous social and financial difficulties. The lockdown, as a result of COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the problem.
The situation is worse in urban cities where life is on the fast lane and dreams are shattered daily.
A report from the United Kingdom (UK) showed that family doctors currently prescribe anti-depressants more now than ever.
Is this how it should be? The answer is No.
Identifying a problem is beginning of solving it. Most causes of depression in our world today are life style induced.
If you compare yourself always with others, you may be depressed if you see that you’re not measuring up to your mates and friends. *Proverbs: 21v23 says “watch your words and hold your tongue; you’ll save yourself a lot of grief.’
Similarly, greed can cause you depression. When you’re not satisfied with what you have and crave for those of others, your sleep may run away as it happened to King Ahab in1Kings:21v4.
Unconfessed sin can trouble your heart always. No matter the amount of holidays you take it won’t leave except you confess it. It’s like a bone stocked in the throat, you will be restless until it’s vomited*. The holy scripture says in Isaiah:59v2 thus: *There is nothing wrong with God; the wrong is with you. Your wrongheaded lives caused the split between you and God*
In the book, *God’s Generals*, many of the evangelists chronicled in the book suffered depression because of fatigue. God did not exempt us from rest. As a loving father, he set an example for us. On the seventh day after creation, he rested. Jesus christ came and followed his father’s footsteps. He took rest from time to time. As long as we live on planet earth, we must rest or be arrested by depression.
The only licence we have to live here is our body. When it’s very weak and can’t carry the spirit, the spirit will leave and death is the result*.
You may ask: How can I overcome depression?
Forsake the life style and things that cause you depression. You have to be determined to stop them with the help of the holy spirit.
Spend time studying the word of God. It’s a light to the soul. Your heart needs to be illuminated with the promises of God for you to enjoy feel good factor of life.
Love your neighbours like yourself. When people know that they’re loved, depression becomes alien to them. Research has shown that being in the midst of loved ones releases *serotonin and dopamine*, two hormones that make us happy.
You must devote time to prayers. There is really nothing prayers can not solve.
The word for you today is this: I can conquer depression with prayer and the word of God. Be encouraged. Your life is precious before God who made you.
Have a fruitful week ahead.
